UPDATE: Please see the MobileRead.com Wiki page for the latest instructions and up-to-date files for the screen-saver hack.
The latest version of NiLuJe’s Kindle 2.5-compatible screen-saver hack has some changes to where the screen-saver images are stored. The installation process is now very similar to that of the 2.5-compatible font hack (see “Installing Update/Hack Files on Your Kindle” for general instructions on installing patch/hack files):
- Install the “jail-break” hack first. This only needs to be done once on your Kindle, at which point it is ready for the other hacks to be installed. Note that this installation always says it failed, but that is the expected behavior. [download jailbreak zip file]
- Download the screen-saver zip file, and unzip it.
- [As of the latest 0.10.N version of this hack, you no longer need to do this step -- the install file will create/copy the necessary directories/file.] In the unzipped folder, find the “src” folder and open it. You should have a “linkss” folder there. Connect your Kindle to your PC and copy that entire folder to the root (top-level) directory of your Kindle.
- Now go back up one level in the hack file folder and find the correct *_install.bin” file for your Kindle (e.g. “update_ss_0.6.N_k2i_install.bin” for a Kindle 2 International (Global) and copy that file to the root directory of your Kindle. (See “Is My Kindle Gobal or US” if you are not 100% sure which you have.)
- Disconnect your Kindle from your PC as per normal for your operating system, then on your Kindle do a Home > Menu > Settings > Menu > Upgrade Your Kindle.
NEW: You can now instead create or copy an empty file named “reboot” to your “linkss” directory, or if you also have the font hack then the “linkfonts” directory instead; and then when you disconnect your Kindle from your PC, it will automatically do a “quick” restart, and you will not have to manually restart it. - To add/remove screen-saver images, reconnect your Kindle to your PC and find that “linkss” folder you put on there earlier. Open that folder and find the “screensaver” folder in it. Open that folder and add your desired image files there.
- Whenever you change the contents of that screensaver folder, you must then restart your Kindle for them to take effect (not an “upgrade” or “factory reset”, but a “restart”). (Or, use the empty “reboot” file method described in step #5, above.)
- Enjoy your new screen-savers.

Also note that, instead of doing a full reboot, as with the fonts hack, you can drop a blank file named ‘reboot’ in the linkss folder (Or in the linkfonts folder, if you also have the fonts hack installed). The Kindle will automatically do a ‘fast’ restart 15s after being unplugged.
And, if you wish to make the order in which your screensavers appear somewhat random, drop a blank file named ‘random’ in the linkss folder. And then reboot your Kindle (a full reboot for this one ^^).
Added NiLuJe’s new “reboot” file feature to steps 5 and 7.
Added note to step #3 regarding change in latest versions.
